The ISP 2019 Pavilion theme is Connection. It is a theme that inspires project goals and encompasses the narrative of the Wine History Project. The narrative of the Wine History Project is a broad narrative of the viticulture environment: agriculture, land use, crop selection, the economic vitality of the county, and the relationships among the people who form the history of San Luis Obispo County. The theme, Connection, challenges the student teams in definition. The theme focuses on both our physical and sensory connections with the land but also looks to inspire the design of the pavilion in addressing the ephemeral experience of display, narrative, interface of the pavilion to ground/ pavilion to visitor. The connection can be one of habited/ inhabited, of the joinery of materials and their meaning, or the layering of materials for effect and of a built work with the environment. It will explore how a pavilion creates space, defines a mood and serves as a space of display for the exhibits and artifacts in the collection of the Wine History Project. Each pavilion design will be tasked with addressing the theme, faithfully, per the team’s definition(s) of Connection and its manifestation in design and construction- from the overall to the detail.
